Yesterday afternoon, Danny and Linda and Zach [The Irvings--Linda is Anne's daughter] stopped by here on their way home to Elmo (down by Price, Utah). They had gone to Salt Lake in the morning to take Zach to Primary Children's Hospital. Eleven-year-old Zach has been suffering from painful swollen knee joints among a number of problems. He is unable to walk without terrible pain. His iron level in his blood is extremely low. He is pale and has been losing a lot of weight. The people at the hospital took blood samples for more testing, but had little to offer in the way of a diagnosis. Linda just recently began giving him lactic acid to aid in digestion seeing as how he is so malnourished now. The lactic acid seems to be helping a little bit.
Today I looked in one of my RN training textbooks, and Zach's symptoms seem to point to pernicious anemia.
